Originally I wasn't going to post this here, but after looking it over, I actually really liked my write-up for Jack and figured I would share it with you guys too. Copied directly from my deviantART journal:
"I decided to re-watch Xiaolin Showdown recently. I found it interesting how differently I viewed it compared to when I first saw it. Now I realize what a big tease the show is.
So, okay, we have this character, right? We'll name him JACK SPICER. Everyone sees him as a bit of a weirdo. He spends all his time alone building robots out of microwaves and blenders. He's often the butt of everyone's joke, gets no respect, and overall, seen as a total nerd.
But JACK SPICER knows how to gain some respect: BECOME AN EVIL GENIUS. Villains are always respected and feared! They take nothing from nobody! The very mention of their name sends chills down people's bones. But how do you become a villain? Well let's go over what we know based off of comics and TV shows:
• Must have a dark and edgy appearance; or it can be a buff appearance with a full suit of armor to show off your strength if you have that sort of body stature.
• Must have various tones of evil laughter. From a snicker to a sneer, you have to be ready for every situation (Especially for gloating).
• Must have evil henchmen ready to report for duty. Bonus points if you have evil henchmen ROBOTS because then you don't have to pay them.
Well let's see... Looks like we have all of that! Time to START TAKING OVER THE WORLD. The problem is, with Jack, he's not very good at being evil. He doesn't have the heart for it. He's full of fears, enjoys hanging out with companions, and can be pretty emotional when he needs to be (IE: Going to his enemies for comfort when he's feeling down). Really, he's just a villain because he feels "small and worthless" (EPISODE QUOTE). He thinks he'll get easy access to respect if he takes over the world, then nobody will mess with him, and everyone will fear him! Plus, being a villain has a cooler image than being a hero (Take that, Mr. I-walk-old-ladies-across-the-street).
He may try to be as evil as possible, double-crossing people, stealing whatever he wants, always rooting for the evil side, but he's far more helpful and effective when on the side of good. It's also a lot friendlier on the Hero's side, even if Jack doesn't want to acknowledge or admit it. People don't double-cross you (At least, not as much), your allies are also your friends rather than just co-workers who nag you for more money or threaten to double-cross you, you're even allowed to show more human emotions, like fear and happiness (Do that on the evil side and you'll be the laughing stock of baddies everywhere).
Still, Jack has doubts about being on the side of good. I mean, saving a kitten from a tree isn't as much of a headline-grabber as "EVIL GENIUS TAKES OVER WHITE HOUSE". Really, if Jack just got some respect and was cured of all his insecurities, he might not try as hard to be evil.
So that sounds like a pretty interesting villain, right? A character who has depth but can still remain funny because of his fears and how whimpy he can act. But now, let's just turn his fears into the CENTRAL POINT OF HIS PERSONALITY, over exaggerate his whimpy behavior to the point of being pathetic, and make him scared of so many things, that he screams after every line of dialogue. OH, and let's make sure we never go anywhere with the character aside from one episode which is quickly forgotten by everyone the instant it ends. TA-DA, WE'VE JUST CREATED COMIC RELIEF. ALL IT TOOK WAS THE DESTRUCTION OF A POSSIBLY INTERESTING CHARACTER.
Curse you Xiaolin Showdown. You tease me with your endless possibilities. I still love your "Gotta-Catch-'em-All" hook and creative showdown layouts.
TL;DR: Jack Spicer could have been awesome if the directors weren't so insistent on making Danny Cooksey use his girly scream every single episode.
Stay tuned next week for the exploration of Grim and how he has been beaten down to the show's punching bag due to the wonderful gags brought on by Fart McGag and Moody!
I'm just kidding, there won't be a next week, nobody reads these things."
